Governing Documents

We rely on feminist process. The Implementation Collective (i.e., organizational governing board) works as a cooperative unit, has voluntary members, and open meetings. See our Contacts page for more information about current members of the Implementation Collective.

AWP’s Her-story

The Association for Women in Psychology was convened during the 1969 meeting of the American Psychological Association because APA was not responding to the issues raised by the new women's liberation movement.

AWP members continued to speak out at APA meetings over the next few years about employment discrimination, sexual harassment, lack of research and theory on women, and other issues we now collect under the term "sexism."

Because of AWP's efforts, an official group for the psychology of women (Division 35) was created in APA in 1973. In 1977, joint AWP and Division 35 efforts resulted in the creation of a Women's Program Office at APA headquarters.

More than three decades later, AWP continues to play an active role outside of APA, sponsoring annual and occasional regional conferences on feminist psychology and publishing a newsletter. We make several awards annually on topics relevant to feminist psychology.

AWP Archive

The Association for Women in Psychology maintains an archive at the Center for the History of Psychology at the University of Ohio in Akron. AWP’s archival collection—comprised of photographs, meeting minutes, correspondence, conference materials, sound recordings, and videos—tells the story of AWP from its founding in 1969 to the present. These materials help preserve the history of the organization for scholars now and in the future.

Examples of materials that can be archived:

  • Photographs, videos, and sound recordings from AWP conferences, meetings, committee gatherings, social events, etc.

  • Correspondence, meeting minutes, notes, unpublished papers that document the history of AWP

  • Ephemera from AWP, including brochures, artwork, pamphlets, posters, etc.

Materials currently archived can be accessed here

If you have materials that you think may be relevant, please contact AWP's archivist, Mala Matacin at matacin@hartford.edu.

Vitamin F Fund

Think about what AWP has meant to you: an intersectional feminist organization challenging the dominant discourses that marginalize and oppress; a forum for presenting and learning cutting-edge research, theory, and practice; a place for new feminists to grow with mentorship and sponsorship; opportunities for leadership at all stages of life; a community of friends and colleagues that we call family.

AWP has filled these roles for over 50 years by building on a strong legacy of developing new frameworks and implementing what we learn. We connect through our annual conference, our regional groups, our topical and identity caucuses, and our electronic newsletter. We change the world through scholarship, activism, and building feminist capacity in our members. We make a difference – for inspiration, watch (anew or again)!

Why do you love AWP?

AWP has worked hard to maintain longevity while keeping membership dues and conference fees low to make sure everyone can access the organization. But, we want to make sure that AWP is here for the long-haul.

AWP has established the Vitamin F Fund, coordinated by a Financial Sustainability subcommittee of the Fundraising Committee. This committee will seek new sources of income and invest them strategically in socially responsible funds. Initially, Vitamin F will serve as a contingency fund, but we anticipate that the returns will provide support for strategic projects to better fulfill our mission.

Thank you for helping AWP stay Vitamin F Strong!
