Call for Proposals

World and national news appear more grim every day, with constant content demonstrating the many injustices of our time: war, famine, poverty, corruption, discrimination, violence, abuse, and more. As we witness others’ pain and experience our own, our understanding of oppression and inequity grows. Many of us feel a visceral, crushing sense of dismay as we watch leaders choose unconscionable actions that only contribute to suffering. At times, we wonder, what is our role? What can we do in the face of tremendous anguish? How can we resist?

We find meaning and hope in the works of scholars and activists who write extensively about applications of feminism to ethics. Feminist ethics have centered care and accountability as essential to be in right relationship with each other. They demand both thinking and feeling deeply, rather than objective, dispassionate inquiry. Our ethics involve moral reasoning that contends with context, recognizes intersectionality, and is fluid across shifting dynamics. Feminist ethics address the relationship between the personal and political, between everyday realities and broader systems. We look to feminist ethics to empower us to make change in our spheres of influence and stay connected to each other during dire times.

At this virtual conference, we will welcome feminists from across the globe to participate in a weekend of conversation, learning, collaboration, and presentation. We will hear from keynote speakers who will transform the way we think about feminist ethics, engage with presentations from leading feminist researchers, clinicians, and community leaders, and reawaken and motivate our sense of shared responsibility for making change in our world. We hope that it will be a weekend full of feminist connection and movement building.

As you consider what work you might submit to the conference, we want to remind you that, while formal research presentations are always appreciated, we also want to curate spaces, conversations, and sessions that honor our need for interdependence, collaboration, community-building, solidarity, and kinship. Therefore, creative, informal, and “unorthodox” proposals will also be valued. In particular, experiential and interpersonal opportunities for learning and growth are highly encouraged, even outside of Workshops (see below).

Highlighted Areas of Focus

  • Feminist ethics and applications to research and scholarship, pedagogy, clinical practice, and advocacy/activism

  • Feminist psychological approaches to understanding current events and resisting fascism and oppression

  • Feminist praxis for decision-making, collaboration and consensus, community engagement, mentorship, movement building, and more

  • Trauma, including gender-based and other identity/oppression-based violence

  • Sexual and reproductive rights and ethics

  • Intersectional and trans-inclusive feminisms, transnational and indigenous feminisms

All proposals related to feminist praxis and psychology are welcome and will be reviewed. If your proposal does not directly address one of the subthemes listed above, please discuss the relevance of your work to the broader conference theme or to feminisms in general.

Proposals may be submitted for the following types of presentations:

  • 50-minute, interactive sessions designed to share skills, knowledge, and/or experience in research, issue-oriented, or learning/practice areas.

  • 50-80-minute facilitated dialogues to bring together those working on similar problems, issues, or concepts to discuss new ideas and to engage in problem-solving. Presenters share their ideas and facilitate group discussion.

  • 50 minutes, up to 3 presentations, grouped together regarding a shared topic of interest. Sessions must include a chair who will facilitate the session and may also have a discussant. A discussant ties together the themes/information from the talk and a chair maintains time and wrangles the speakers. Time should be made available for Q+A.

  • 10-12 minute presentations of theoretical issues, research data, clinical case material, treatment methods, program descriptions, etc. Individual papers will be grouped together by the program committee on similar themes. Time should be made available for Q+A.

  • 20-minute feedback sessions designed for authors to share works in progress (could be research studies, clinical approaches, teaching activities, or other applications) and receive collaborative feedback from attendees. Works can be at any stage of development. Presenters briefly share their work and request specific feedback. The conference organizers may group WIPs on similar topics in joint sessions.

  • Visually inviting presentations of an individual study or project, including graphs, tables, pictures, etc. Additionally, the poster author(s) should be available for the discussion of their work during the poster session.
